Formation electoral arrangements in 1974

This page contains links to Directions by the Secretary of State for Scotland in November 1973 which defined the electoral arrangements for the Region, Islands Area and District local authorities on their formation. These local authorities were introduced by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973.

The region electoral divisions were used between 1974 and 1982. The district wards were used between 1974 and 1980 for some districts and 1984 for the rest. The islands area electoral divisions were used between 1974 and 1978.

The Secretary of State issued a number of clarifications to these electoral areas: these are included in the PDF copies of the Directions below. A small number of amendments to these electoral areas took place as a result of reviews of administrative areas which we carried out prior to our Initial Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements. This page also includes links to those amendments. Detailed verbal descriptions of each ward boundary are contained in the reports listed below.
